Published on in Star Teacher Program

(September 24, 2024…Phoenix, AZ) B&C honored Tamicha Carthen as our September Star Teacher. She is a teacher at Bethune Elementary School in the Phoenix Elementary School District. Tamicha has been has been teaching 3rd & 4th grade English, Math and History since 2009 (although she worked at the school beginning in 2005). She has been the lead teacher several times and managed to raise 7 children during her teaching career. She also has a side gig as an actor and stand-up comedian. As the award recipient Tamicha received a check for $500 and her school received an additional check for $250.

Part of her $500 award will be used for new chair covers for her classroom library. As an added bonus we were able to give her a gift card for dinner at Kasai Japanese Steakhouse courtesy of AZ Big Media. A very generous and thoughtful gesture on their part.

Bethune is a K-8 Title 1 School at 1310 S. 15th Avenue with 370 students that opened in 1947. 91% of students get free breakfast and lunch at the school. They offer free after school care through a partnership with the YMCA that offers:

  • Homework assistance
  • STEM, arts, and physical activities
  • Team building exercises
  • Positive social and emotional learning
  • Programs aligned with district academic goals

Bethune School principal Claron Sells said she would put the $250 gift to the school toward items for their student store as rewards used for the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

Tamicha was nominated by Vincent Reese who wrote:

She has worked at the school since 2005 she got her teachers degree in 2009 and raised 7 kids and has managed to be the lead teacher on that campus multiple times. She teaches with a combination of textbook and real life. She has gone to student’s houses at times in the neighborhood to make sure that they have what they need or that they are safe. She is the toughest and most direct teacher I’ve ever seen teach. Not to mention that she’s holding down an acting and standup comedy career with one more baby in the nest, a 15yo. She’s awesome!

A Valley teacher is chosen each month to receive $500 through a nominating process on the firm’s website www.bcattorneys.com. Nominations are accepted from students, former students and parents who wish to honor and thank a teacher who has had a profound impact on their life. Many teachers spend their own money to augment the costs of classroom supplies, field trips and other non-covered costs that arise throughout the school year. B&C hopes to alleviate that burden for one deserving teacher each month. In addition, the school where the educator teaches receives a check for $250 to be used at their discretion.

Nominations are open to all teachers in K-12 who teach in Maricopa County. Winners will be notified and then presented a check at their school by a member of Burch & Cracchiolo. Photos and/or video will be taken to post on the firm website and social media. To nominate go to www.bcattorneys.com, click on the “Nominate a Star Teacher” button and tell us why you think your teacher deserves the B&C Star Teacher Award.
